What is Marathi and where is it spoken?

Marathi (मराठी) is an Indo-Aryan language native to the state of Maharashtra in western India, with around 83 million speakers — making it one of the world's 15 most-spoken languages. It is the official language of Maharashtra and Goa (alongside Konkani), and is recognised by India as a classical language since 2024. Major dialects include Standard Marathi, Varhadi and Konkani-Marathi.

What grammar features does Marathi have?

Marathi has three grammatical genders (masculine, feminine, neuter), eight cases (often realised as postpositions), and split ergativity in the perfective tenses. It also has an inclusive/exclusive 'we' distinction (आपण āpaṇ vs आम्ही āmhī). Unique to Devanagari-using Indo-Aryan languages, Marathi has the additional letter ळ for a retroflex lateral /ɭ/ borrowed from Dravidian languages.
