Nauruan (Dorerin Naoero) is the indigenous Austronesian language of Nauru, one of the world's smallest countries, with around 9,000 speakers on the island. It is the sole official language of Nauru alongside English. Linguists generally classify it as a Micronesian language with significant divergence from its neighbours; it may form an independent branch within Micronesian.
Nauruan has a four-vowel system with phonemic length, an inventory of consonants that includes labio-velar and palatalised series, and a system of pronouns distinguishing inclusive and exclusive 'we' along with singular, dual and plural numbers. Word order is typically SVO. The Latin orthography was first proposed by German missionaries in the 1890s and reformed in 1938 to remove German diacritics.
