El ido fue creado en 1907 por la Delegación para la Adopción de una Lengua Auxiliar Internacional como una reforma del esperanto. Su nombre significa «descendiente» en esperanto. Frente al esperanto, el ido suprime los diacríticos (sin ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ, ŭ), reduce el uso obligatorio del acusativo, aplica reglas más estrictas de formación de palabras y cambió algunas raíces que se consideraban demasiado sesgadas hacia ciertas lenguas europeas.
Las estimaciones de hablantes activos de ido van desde unos cientos hasta varios miles en todo el mundo. La comunidad es pequeña pero mantiene la Uniono por la Linguo Internaciona Ido (ULI) y encuentros periódicos en línea.
