Every word in your Amharic reading passage is clickable. Get English translations and grammar help while you decode the Fidäl script.
Type any topic and LingoBear generates a fresh Amharic reading passage — from coffee ceremonies to Ethiopian football.
Amharic is written in the Ge'ez script (Fidäl, ፊደል), an abugida with 33 base consonants. Each consonant has seven vowel-modified forms, giving 231 commonly used syllabic characters. Unlike many world scripts it is read left to right and uses ።፣፤ for sentence and clause punctuation.
Amharic is a Semitic language with triconsonantal roots, SOV word order, and rich verb morphology that marks subject, object, gender and politeness. Nouns have two genders and pluralize with -očč. LingoBear lets you see these patterns in real reading material on topics you choose.
