El galés (Cymraeg) es una lengua celta britónica propia de Gales, con unos 880.000 hablantes declarados (censo de 2021). Desde la Welsh Language Measure de 2011 recibe igual trato que el inglés en Gales, y el Gobierno galés se ha fijado la meta de un millón de hablantes para 2050. Existe además una pequeña comunidad galesoparlante en la Patagonia argentina (Y Wladfa), establecida en 1865, que despierta gran curiosidad entre los hispanohablantes.
El galés usa el orden verbo-sujeto-objeto (Mae ci yn rhedeg, «hay un perro corriendo»), tres mutaciones de la consonante inicial, preposiciones conjugadas (gen i «conmigo», gen ti «contigo» son palabras únicas) y dos géneros gramaticales. El alfabeto tiene 28 letras en las que dígrafos como ch, dd, ll y ng cuentan como una sola letra en los diccionarios.
