El urdu y el hindi hablados —juntos llamados hindustani— comparten una gramática indoaria y un vocabulario básico, así que la conversación cotidiana es mutuamente inteligible. Las diferencias están sobre todo en la escritura (nastaliq persoárabe frente a devanagari), en el vocabulario culto (persa y árabe en el urdu, sánscrito en el hindi) y en el uso cultural. El urdu es la lengua nacional de Pakistán y una de las lenguas reconocidas de la India.
El urdu se escribe de derecha a izquierda en una versión caligráfica del alfabeto persoárabe llamada nastaliq, inclinada de arriba a la derecha hacia abajo a la izquierda. El alfabeto tiene 39 letras base, incluidas retroflejas propias del indostán (ٹ, ڈ, ڑ) y consonantes aspiradas formadas con la ھ. Las vocales breves no se escriben en el texto cotidiano. Las fuentes nastaliq como Jameel Noori Nastaleeq han generalizado la edición digital desde los años 2000.
