Sí: de todas las lenguas germánicas septentrionales, el islandés es la que menos ha cambiado desde la época medieval. La gramática (cuatro casos, tres géneros, conjugaciones de verbos fuertes) está en gran parte intacta, y el alfabeto aún usa la þ (thorn) y la ð (eth) que el inglés perdió a finales de la Edad Media.
