El telugu (తెలుగు) es una lengua dravídica propia de los estados indios de Andhra Pradesh y Telangana, con unos 95 millones de hablantes, la tercera lengua materna más hablada de la India. Fue reconocida como lengua clásica de la India en 2008. La industria del cine telugu, a veces llamada Tollywood, es una de las mayores de la India por número de producciones.
El telugu es aglutinante, con orden sujeto-objeto-verbo, tres géneros en el singular (masculino, femenino y neutro) pero solo dos en el plural (racional e irracional) y siete casos marcados por posposiciones y sufijos. Los verbos codifican persona, número, género, tiempo y modo mediante largas cadenas de sufijos. Se le conoce como el «italiano de Oriente» porque casi todas las palabras terminan en vocal, lo que le da un ritmo muy melódico, cómodo para un hispanohablante.
