El zulú (isiZulu) es una lengua bantú nguni, la primera lengua más hablada de Sudáfrica, con unos 12 millones de hablantes nativos y otros 16 millones que lo usan como segunda lengua. Es una de las 12 lenguas oficiales de Sudáfrica y se enseña en las escuelas de KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng y Mpumalanga. Está muy emparentado con el xhosa, el ndebele y el suazi.
El zulú usa tres consonantes chasqueantes —c (dental), q (alveolar) y x (lateral)— tomadas del contacto con las lenguas joisán, cada una con variantes simple, aspirada, sonora y nasalizada. Tiene unas 15 clases nominales cuyos prefijos rigen la concordancia de toda la frase (umuntu «persona», abantu «personas»). Los verbos son aglutinantes y codifican sujeto, objeto, tiempo, aspecto y modo sobre una sola raíz.
