Corsican (Corsu) is an Italo-Romance language descended from medieval Tuscan and remains closely related to standard Italian, especially in the north of the island. Mutual intelligibility with central Italian is very high. The southern Sartenese variety bridges Corsican and the Gallurese dialect of northern Sardinia.
Corsican is a polynomial language — multiple regional written norms (Cismuntincu in the north and Pumuntincu in the south) are accepted side by side rather than a single 'standard Corsican'.
