Italian is FSI Category I — about 600 hours for proficiency, like French and Spanish. The 21-letter alphabet drops j, k, w, x and y from native words. Pronunciation is very regular: vowels are short and clear, double consonants are pronounced long, and stress usually falls on the penultimate syllable. The main challenge is mastering verb conjugations across seven moods.
Italy unified only in 1861, and 'Italian' as a national language is essentially literary Tuscan promoted by Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. Most regions still have their own Romance varieties — Neapolitan, Sicilian, Venetian, Lombard, Sardinian — which are linguists' separate languages rather than dialects of standard Italian. LingoBear generates texts in standard Italian by default.
