El ucraniano y el ruso son lenguas hermanas eslavas orientales: quien domina el ruso suele entender un 50-60 % del ucraniano al primer contacto, pero ambas han divergido bastante. El ucraniano comparte más vocabulario con el polaco y el bielorruso, usa las letras і, ї, є y ґ (el ruso usa и y carece de estas) y conserva un caso vocativo para dirigirse a alguien.
