El estonio y el finés son lenguas fínicas de la familia urálica, no indoeuropeas. Sus hablantes a menudo entienden frases sencillas de la otra lengua, pero ambas se separaron lingüísticamente hace unos 1.000 años y muchos cognados han cambiado de significado.
