El feroés (føroyskt) es una lengua germánica septentrional insular que, junto con el islandés, desciende del nórdico antiguo occidental. Tiene unos 72.000 hablantes en las Islas Feroe y su diáspora. Conserva más de la gramática del nórdico antiguo (cuatro casos, tres géneros) que las lenguas escandinavas continentales, pero su ortografía moderna hace que la pronunciación sea más difícil de predecir que en islandés.
La ortografía feroesa, fijada por V. U. Hammershaimb en 1846, es deliberadamente etimológica: muestra las formas históricas del nórdico antiguo en lugar de cómo suenan las palabras hoy.
