What is Limburgan and where is it spoken?

Limburgan (Limburgs) is a West Germanic language continuum spoken by around 1.3 million people in the Dutch and Belgian provinces of Limburg and adjacent parts of the German Lower Rhine. It is recognised as a regional language under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in the Netherlands. There is no single standard — Maastrichts, Sittards, Roermonds and others differ noticeably.

What's unusual about Limburgan pronunciation?

Most Limburgan varieties have a lexical pitch accent — words can change meaning based on which of two tones (sjtaote 'stress' vs sjtaòte 'pushing') they carry. This is highly unusual within western continental Europe and links Limburgan with neighbouring varieties of Ripuarian Franconian. Vocabulary mixes Dutch, German and French depending on the area, plus distinctive local words.
