El eslovaco y el checo son lenguas hermanas eslavas occidentales y siguen siendo muy inteligibles entre sí: durante décadas ambas se emitieron sin restricciones en los mismos canales de la televisión checoslovaca. La gramática eslovaca es algo más sencilla (menos declinaciones irregulares), usa ä y ô donde el checo no, y tiene una regla rítmica melódica que impide dos sílabas largas seguidas. Los eslovacos suelen entender mejor el checo que al revés.
El eslovaco tiene seis casos (sin vocativo como caso separado), tres géneros, pares de verbos perfectivo/imperfectivo y el acento siempre en la primera sílaba. Su alfabeto latino tiene 46 caracteres con extras como č, ď, ľ, ĺ, ň, ŕ, š, ť, ž, además de marcas de vocal larga (á, é, í, ó, ú, ý), ä y ô.
